& Ukrainian pharmaceutical markets prospectives |

Pharmacy in the emergent markets such as Russia and Ukraine is developing very
quickly adopting high technology and new methods of work. There are dramatic
changes observed in both countries during the last decade. After planning economy,
stable healthcare structure and regular smooth medicines supply system established
during 70 years of Soviet times in those countries everything moved apart and
all former soviet republics started to build new model of functioning within newly
formed countries. What valuables all of them get from the Soviet Union? They'd
inherited centralized management and supply system model, well developed pharmacies,
hospitals, polyclinics and laboratories network as well as sufficient number of
highly qualified healthcare professionals. Period after 1991 was named as
transitional in the economy of both countries since all organizational and regulatory
changes were directed on adopting main principles of market economy. So, main
barriers to overcome were absence of knowledge about market economy, marketing,
absence of the experience of work in market economy conditions, no financial support
for development and absence of the proper legislation. |
 Willingness
to develop the pharmacy up to the acceptable standards, great enthusiasm and strained
efforts brought to significant improvements on those markets. From state only
sector pharmacy turned into dynamically privatizing sector leaving less than 50%
of all the pharmacies and 6% of the industry in the state ownership. Number of
the private pharmacy chains operate on the territory of both countries and they
number is constantly growing. Since 1991 many foreign pharmaceutical companies
established their representations in Russia and Ukraine and set up they business
there. From very little pharmaceutical import during soviet period it has grown
up to 80% of the market during early 90-th. Further development of the national
manufacturers and their favorable price policy played its role in import decrease
to 65% lately. One of the important factors which are slowing down further
development is slow increase of the income of the population that clearly reflects
on the sales of medicines since major part of people pays full price for them.
