Ukrainian
manufacturers operate in the lowest price segment of the market,
supplying mainly generics, branded generics and vitamins. In 2001
local pharmaceutical production grew by 21.4%. Locally produced
pharmaceuticals constituted 43.9% of the total pharmaceutical market,
while import accounted for 56.1%.Ukrainian pharmaceutical industry
manufactures approximately 1,300 medicines. The largest local producers
are: Darnytsa (Kiev), Kyivmedpreparat (Kiev), Pharmak (Kiev), Borshchahivsky
Chemical and Pharmaceutical Plant (Kiev); Indar (Kiev), Stryrol
(Donetsk); Zdoroviye (Kharkiv); Biostimulator (Odessa), Halychpharm
(Lviv).
Ukraine is second in the CIS after Russia in the number of enterprises
in the pharmaceutical sector reached 160 manufacturing companies,
85% of all Ukrainian pharmaceuticals produced by 22 of them. Major
part of those companies has been privatized, and only seven are
still state owned.

Total
number of retail pharmacies in Ukraine is 11460 and they are divided
by ownership type into three categories: Private, which covers almost
10% of all pharmacies, state, which is nearly 48 % from all of them
and joint-stock companies - 42%. Ukrainian state statistics gives
us an average of one pharmacy turnover that equals to 40 thousand
USD a year. Certainly, those figures vary significantly between
pharmacies of different ownership types as well as very much depends
from the region where pharmacy is situated.

Tendency
of creation of the pharmacy chains reflected on all regions but
the most productive in their business are Central and Eastern regions
due to higher density of the population and industry there. Biggest
pharmacy chains are situated mainly in Eastern and Central regions
that also correspond to main locations of the top pharmaceutical
distributors.

Both
Russian and Ukrainian domestic manufacturers operate in the lowest
price segment of the market which is easy to understand looking
to GDP per capita in both countries and taking into account that
almost all patients pay full price for their medicines there.
For to compare retail prices for some of the most popular medicines
see table below.

Obviously,
prices on the locally manufactured generic products are much cheaper
than those in the UK and in other European countries. While for
branded products prices are nearly same or higher than basic UK
prices.
